Maggie Elizabeth Hill, daughter of the late Virginia and John Topping, was born on June 20, 1930 in Parksley, Virginia. She departed this life November 26, 2016 after long and valiant battles with illnesses.
She received her education in the Virginia Public Schools. As a young adult, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland where the late Alice Topping helped her get settled. Maggie married the late Walter C. Hill on June 20, 1967. She enjoyed being a homemaker. Her husband was a naturalist, gardener and fisherman. For many years, they grew a backyard garden that was the pride of the neighborhood. They both loved to cook and many were welcomed to delicious crab cakes, fried chicken, and Maggie’s homemade rolls from their table.
Maggie developed a close relationship with Walter’s adult daughter and granddaughter, who she affectionately called “my children.” She was also very fond of her husband’s relatives in Steelton, Pennsylvania. She enjoyed attending family gatherings in Steelton and welcoming family when they came to Baltimore. Maggie was friendly with neighbors, especially Carrie, Greta, Joyce, and Henry Goode. After Walter passed away, Maggie relocated back to Parksley. She moved her aunt Carrie Perry from Baltimore to Parksley and was her longtime caregiver.
When she became ill, Maggie was assisted by a friend Lucinda Riley, her cousin Marva, and Marva’s husband John Matthews. She returned to Baltimore to receive medical care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital where she was successfully treated. After her hospitalization, Maggie resided at the home of her stepdaughter. When illness claimed most of her sight and mobility, Maggie moved to Ausburg Lutheran, an assisted living facility, and later moved to Milford Manor for extended care.
Maggie leaves to mourn: an aunt, Carrie Perry; step daughter, Sevalyn White; a step granddaughter, Shawan Lewis; a step great granddaughter, Nia Lewis; and a host of other relatives and friends.
