Our Heritage

Clifton Carlos Humbles, a native of Lynchburg, Virginia, moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia upon graduating from Virginia Union University, where he met and married his wife, Marie C. Humbles.  After moving to the Eastern Shore, he continued his education at the Eckel's School of Mortuary Science and became a licensed mortician in 1951.

He began his funeral service career with  J. Edgar Thomas Funeral Home of Tasley, VA. In 1964, he founded the C. C. Humbles Funeral Service, of which Cooper & Humbles Funeral Company, Inc. is the successor.

Cliff came from a long line of philanthropists and his generosity and support to community endeavors was no exception.  He was a great believer in fostering youth.  In the early fifties, he established a barbershop and trained numerous young men in the trade.  Having been a star basketball guard on the famous 1938-39 "Dream Team" of Virginia Union University, he continued to demonstrate his love for athletics by sponsoring The Humbles' Stars Flag football team, who became Virginia State Champions and went on to National competition.

Cliff mentored and trained many young men and women in the funeral service profession, until his death on Feburary 6, 1997.  His dedication and passion for the business is reflected today in the lives of many of those individuals.

We at the Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co. are proud to be a part of this rich heritage and continue to serve our community with the values instilled by Clifton Carlos Humbles.
