Obituary for William "Bill" Corbin Sr.

William "Bill" Corbin Sr.
On Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Heritage Hall Nursing Center, the Lord in His infinite wisdom called our dear loved one, William Corbin, Sr., home. He was born on August 7, 1922 in Bullbeggar, Virginia to the late Russell Davis and Nicie Corbin.

Bill, as he was affectionately known, entered the workforce at a young age. He worked on Willie Young’s Farm for twenty-one years, until he gained employment with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Bill worked for VDOT for forty years until his retirement. He then began to cut grass in his spare time; he made sure several neighbors yards were manicured.

Bill was a faithful and devoted member of First Baptist Church in Mappsville, Virginia. There he served on the Usher Board for many years. He also took great pride in making sure the church yard was always cut. He loved to be in the worship service, and especially loved to hear Ride Out Your Storm and Precious Lord; they were his favorites.

On December 27, 1945, he entered holy matrimony with Hortense Newby, and their union was blessed with fourteen children and reared two grandchildren. Bill loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Whenever they would get ready to leave he would say, “Time enough.” He loved being outdoors, sitting under the tree or working in his garden. He also loved to watch Westerns-Bonanza was his favorite.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hortense Newby Corbin; children, Clarence Corbin and Sally Parker; and brother, Clinton Rue.

He leaves to cherish his memories: twelve children, Cornelius (Sarah) Corbin, Rennie (Clarence) Graham, Shirley (Rudolph) Washington, William (Patsy) Corbin, Jr., Thomas Corbin, Frances (Tyrone) Johnson, Mary (Preston) Clayton, Joyce (Allen) Arehart, Mae Corbin, Marie Corbin, Robert (Cresandre) Corbin, and Hattie (John) Morris; forty grandchildren, two granddaughters, he reared as his own, Ruth (Gary) Harris and Shelia (William) Ridley; several great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Rosa Needam; caregiver, Gladys Brent; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
