Rosa “Rosie” Lee Dabney Lewis, the daughter of the late Jack and Sara Dabney, was born on June 24, 1930 in Camden, New Jersey. She entered into her eternal rest on August 2, 2017 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, Virginia.
Rosie was educated in the public schools in Accomack County. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and later joined Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Accomac, Virginia. She was an active member in church, serving as a missionary, pastor’s aide, member of the Gospel Choir, and Household of Ruth.
Rosie’s last employment was with the Accomack County School system which concluded in 1976 due to illness.
Rosie was married to the late Fred Edward Lewis for sixty-three years before his death. From that union, they had four children; one daughter, Shirley Lewis Kellam, preceded her in death.
Rosie was immensely loved by many. She enjoyed spending time away with her daughter, son, and granddaughter. She was renowned for babysitting in her home for several ministers’ children and other children in the community. Her home was that “one” neighborhood house where all the children would come over and play.
Rosie leaves very fond memories in the hearts of her three children, George (Joyce) Lewis of Gargatha, VA, Ethel Lewis (Rafael) Font of Salisbury, MD, and Rodney “Freddie” Lewis of Philadelphia, PA; step-son, Roger Young of Clayton, NJ; nine grandchildren, one whom she raised as her own, Latina of Richmond, VA, Derrick, Kendra, Janean, and Shaniqua all of Hampton Roads, VA, Tobias (Latoya) of Salisbury, MD, Jamar of Savageville, VA, and Schaneen of Macon, GA; twenty-five great-grandchildren; eight great, great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Harmon of Temple Terrace, FL and Mary Etta of Onley, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Rosie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, sister, Elizabeth Kelly, brother-in-law, Robert Lewis, and grandson, Doran Satchell.
The family wishes to render special thanks to Rev. Mary Washington for being there every day and night with their loved one until the end. Our thanks and love to Nathaniel Blake, who thought of her as a mother, for checking on her daily and rendering any kind act she needed. Special thanks also to Rev. Percell Widgeon for being a caring and helping neighbor for many years.
